Iliotibial Band Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

If you are experiencing aching or a sharp pain on the outside of your knee or hip, you might have a tight iliotibial band (IB)

 

What is Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

Iliotibial band syndrome is where a tendon called the iliotibial band gets irritated or swollen from rubbing against your hip or knee bones. It rubs against your bones when it gets too tense. The swelling and irritation can cause several symptoms. 

Causes of iliotibial band syndrome?

  • Cooling down too quickly after exercising.
  • Not enough rest
  • Not stretching properly or enough before & after exercising.
  • Pushing yourself too hard during exercise.
  • Running on a tilted or curved surface.
  • Running downhill.
  • Warming up too quickly before exercising.
  • Ill fitted or worn shoes.

 

Symptoms of iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS)?

 

  • Hip pain
  • Clicking sensations
  • Knee pain
  • Warmth and rednes on the outside of your knee 

 

Treatment for iliotibial band syndrome

 

  • Rest to prevent making the condition worse
  • Osteopathy: An Osteopath will assess, test and treat your condition. They will also teach you stretches, strengthening exercises and other treatments to help relieve your hip and knee pain.
