Osteopathy and Migraines

There are a number of therapy options, including Osteopathy, to consider when looking for help with migraines.


Migraine is the most common neurological condition in the developed world. Research shows that Migraine affects over eight million people in the UK and is suggested that an estimated 25 million days are lost from work or school because of migraine.

 

Unfortunately many people will suffer from migraine for years throughout their life which negatively impacts upon their work, family and social lives.

There are several factors that can contribute to migraines including; stress, diet, tension, anxiety, poor posture, fatigue, dehydration, hormonal influences, and environmental triggers plus many more.

There is currently no cure for migraines, although a number of treatments are available to help ease the symptoms. In the first instance it is important to visit your GP. It may take time to work out which is the best treatment for you and you may need to try a few different treatments before you find what works for you. It may also help to keep a record of your symptoms and how any treatments affect your migraines.

Other things to consider include:

  • Assess what factors around you may be causing you stress
  • Eating regularly
  • Drink plenty of water and limiting your intake of drinks containing caffeine and alcohol
  • Maintain a regular sleep pattern
  • Take regular exercise and take regular breaks at work
  • Get plenty of fresh air
  • Avoid bright, flashing or flickering lights (e.g. fluorescent)
  • Ensure that computer screens are properly adjusted and fitted with anti-glare filters
  • Ensure our posture is correct
  • Ensure that your working environment is as ergonomically designed as possible
